  1. Podiatry Student
Hi,

My Girlfriend is a podiatry student and is currently searching for what external rotations she will do. I wanted to build a spreadsheet in Excel that lists all of the residencys (I have this portion) and then takes some sort of student rating. I was wondering if there was a website that rates all the residencies by students who have gone there on External Rotation. She told me she doesn't know about any but i figured that your site would be the best place to find if anyone else has heard of such a site. BTW if anyone else would like the spreadsheet its going to automate the travel time (mapquest) and put it in the spreadsheet (if i have time) just send me a private message.

Regards,

Every year the APMSA puts together a book containing evaluations that residents have filled out about what life is like at their various programs. Most of the time what people say is pretty subjective, but it does give you some idea about what the program is like. The books are available for purchase for around 20 bucks.

It also depends on what she is wanting to do after residency (trauma vs wound care/limb salvage vs c&c)

Theoretically, which makes the highest/best chance of earning potential in regard to trauma vs wound/salv? Please don't say it depends. It's not an either or situation. It's shaded to one side or the other, but which side is best? I'm wondering which MOST likely brings in the best chance at high income.

That is absolutely the wrong way to go about deciding how you want to practice, but the most money seems to be in wound care right now. With the shift in healthcare towards preventative medicine and decreases in procedure reimbursment it is becoming more difficult to make a great deal with just surgery. Also keep in mind that for most trauma you are reimbursed just once for the surgery and the continued follow up care of that patient is "on the house".

High income = get into podiatry school. Work hard in school. Get good grades. Get a good residency. Work hard in residency. Get into a practice. Work hard at work. Get a high income.

Nothing to it.

yeah the people here never actually answer this question, they just say work hard. But this forum is useful for a lot of other things👍

Where can this book be found or ordered? I would be interested in finding out what residents have to say about some of the programs I am interested in.

Your school should have it on library reserve or in the clerkship office. It's a neat intro to the programs, but keep in mind that all the reviews are written by residents and will be biased to make their program sound good... numbers might be fudged, downsides to the program minimized, etc. I didn't know it was available for individual order from APMA... try contacting your class APMSA rep?

Your school should also have reviews of programs from past externs. Barry started putting theirs online this year. In the end, your best source is probably just word of mouth, though.

The book is available and like Feli suggested I would talk to your apmsa rep or contact the APMA directly. Everything in the book is pretty subjective, but there are plenty of residents in the book who are honest about the weaknesses of their programs as well.

FYI
Residency survey put out by the APMSA SHOULD BE in every schools library.
You can get a personal copy for 50 dollars, until supplies run out. If you want one, contact your class APMSA rep. and they can help you order it from APMSA.
