What does your program do for residency graduation? Please elaborate on venue, dinner, speakers, awards, festivities, etc. I'm hoping to get ideas for my class for next summer. Thank you!

Arcan, thanks for your reply; however, I'm looking for residency-sponsored event ideas, rather than informal or unofficial gatherings.

We did a dinner and graduation at a local hotel. There were no special guest speakers; all the surgical department heads spoke about the graduating residents.

The only award I recall was a teaching award given by the medical students. The department heads usually had gifts for the graduating residents and each resident made a short speech but nothing other than that

We have our graduation at a nice local restaurant where we rent out a large part of it for the afternoon. No paid speakers, just the people in the department. The PD says a nice, well thought out speech about each graduating resident (small program), we get our framed certificate and say a few words. The awards given are to a resident for teaching by medical students and then to the faculty from medical students and another to a faculty member from residents for teaching. I think we are also getting some sort of a present this year too.

Our residency had dinner at a local hotel that also had a ballroom adjacent. The chief resident every year is responsible for the fundraising - all the doctors involved with the residency contribute. When I was chief I raised $7,000, some went in the bank for the next year.

6-7 We first got group and individual family photos from professional photographer

Dinner 7-9: Our program director gave a speech and introduced the incoming interns- usually they all come since the banquet is last week of June. The the out going Chief Resident give a speech and introduces the new chief Resident. Usually there is a slide show of events and antics from the past year. Then the Residency director hads out the diplomas to the seniors.

Dance: from 9-1am we have DJ and live dancing, free alcohol drinks (that's what the fund raiser helps buy) and some type of snacks (veggie tray, cheese ad crackers, had a chocolate fountaing one year).

Similar here, Dinner/reception at a local hotel with teaching attendings and families. PD usually says some words, diplomas presented to interns, graduating residents and then graduating fellows. Usually the chief will say some words and present attending of the year award.

Couple years ago the senior class raised money and had a DJ and open bar for after the dinner. Usually there is at least some sort of unofficial after party that happens.

At mine, we had a formal graduation ceremony in the morning with breakfast. Each resident, when called, would come to the podium and make a short speech. After that, lots of photographs were taken. A few days later, we had a dinner and dance at a local banquet facility with open bar. At the end of the night, the chief resident gave us each a small version of our diplomas. We received the official diplomas on the last day of residency from the program director.
