Hi all.. I'm new here and hope to write this post in the correct location..
having a full gmc license for a year now, after graduating from Hungary and doing my internship in tlv Israel.. ( it was difficult to get accepted in Israel to med school ) after finishing my internship I applied for orthopedic program here in tlv and about to start it in a few months.. Now playing with the thought of finding a surgery program in the UK .. I think it's impossible almost.. Since England med school combined the residency with the med school as I understood..
Can some one that passed through my path give me some info?
Thanks

I can comment much except for the fact that medical residencies are not combined with medical school. One has to apply for the foundation year (FY) program (which consists of 3 years). One can directly go to FY 2 if they have already done their internship (intact they are not eligible to apply to FY 1) which can be a problem if one is not acquainted with the British health care system.

You enter into a medical residency only after having finished the FY program and taken taken an exam for that particular specialty (MRCP, FRCS depending on the specialty etc.)

The easiest way to get it is if you have a UK citizenship or are have a permanent residence card in one of the European countries. It will be very tough otherwise. You could try looking into Ireland, but I believe the requirements (permanent residency/EU citizenship) apply there as well.

Coming from Hungary and not from uk school makes it difficult to apply for any jobs.. Even registering to the nhs just for a job search was difficult since I didn't stand their criteria ( sorry for the steam release...) Is there are no no shortcuts and the gmc were so kind to deal with my registration since I paid them the fee..

Some pretty odd things are being said in this thread. Firstly, to clear up a few misconceptions:

1) There is no such thing as residency in the UK. What equates to residency would be speciality and/or core training.

2) The foundation programme is two years long, not three and must be completed before entering speciality training in surgery or anything else. It's more similar to the US internship than a residency. It is not a part of medical school.

3) MRCP, MRCS, etc do not need to be attained prior to commencement of speciality/core training.

4) Since you have graduated from an EU medical school, you shouldn't have any extra problems in registering here with your medical degree. What I mean by this is that you do not need to do the PLAB etc.

5) More info on the foundation programme here: http://www.foundationprogramme.nhs.uk/pages/home
