Was starting to schedule some of my interview trips, and was curious...are interview dinners the night before usually applicant only? Or can you bring your spouse if they are with you? I know one or two has said specifically that spouses are allowed, but many make no mention. Is it tacky to call the program and ask? I really don't care about the free meal (I am more then willing to pay for my wife), I care more about her interacting with some residents and giving me her outside perspective on stuff.

Just call the program if there's any doubt, but most welcome spouses/partners for precisely the reasons you cite.

Conspicuously, the only program of 11 where I interviewed that specifically forbade spouses from attending was MGH/Mclean. Except for Stanford, which had no dinner or reception at all.

Despite most programs will welcome spouses.... don't bring them is my advice. They will be a third party and at best you will gain little benefits from having them at worse your spouse will say something and not realize you didnt want it said.

If the resident are bringing their spouses then it's a different ball game (that usually doesnt happen in the dinner-before).

some programs WANT you to bring your spouses. I don't know about psych but some specifically mention to bring them to dinner and that spouses will be doing stuff on interview day.

Makes plenty of sense when you think about it. Sell a spouse on the program and she/he'll influence your ROL.

I seriously considered RSVPing to these dinners and saying that I would be there but my SO would not due to being wrist deep in pregnant vagina. But I decide that wasn't professional.
