I was wondering whether or not the location of one's residency has an impact on their future practice. For example, if i want to practice in Houston or Dallas would it be better to do a residency program in that particular city. Do you establish more contacts? Will your practice be more successful since you have been in that city longer? I would think that by knowing more doctors in the city that your going to practice in will help a lot. Or could i do a program in Boston and establish a practice in either Houston or Dallas and be just as successful. I know there are many other things that go into a successful practice but i was just wandering how important location is (keeping those other important things constant). Thanks!!

I've heard its easier to practice in the location where you do your residency. Apparently you get more offers in the immediate area. Exceptions: often times the PD/Chair and others in the program have contacts elsewhere so thats a potiental source...and if the PD/Chair of the dept is specialized in whatever that also helps in the sense that, for example, a lot of critical care docs know each other regionally and sometimes nationally so thats another source for job placement.

depends on what program in boston.

depends... the market, in general, in texas is great. I wouldn't worry.. do a residency where you want to be for a few years.... I plan to come back to texas.
