residency look at undergrad gpa?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is probably the wrong forum for this question, as it pertains to a residency issue.

Having said that, when I applied I was never asked about my undergrad GPA - but I may have had to provide a transcript. I doubt it figures into the Match process much.

Why are you asking? Aren't you applying to med schools now?

Ah yes, I was foolishly only considering G Surg. I know Ortho can ask for quite a bit as well.

In ortho there are a handful of programs that ask for undergrad grades/transcripts or MCAT scores. In fact, one even wanted to know about high school class rank????

i was asked, mainly b/c i went to med school and undergrad at the same institution. thus, my transcripts could not be separated. i did pretty well, but one of my low marks came up several times just because they took the time to look over my application.

Are you serious? Sheesh I feel like we went back to the stone age. Does anyone truly care what you got in European History I?

Some fairly competitive specialties do ask for undergrad transcripts or even MCAT scores (ie, PRS).

Really......" Im sunk. How can I know which programs require undergrad transcripts and MCAT scores before I apply? If they see my undergrad work, I'll never get in. Everyone's mentioning GS and Ortho as asking for these.... are competetive IM and EM programs also asking for undergrad records?

Only the specialties participating in the San Francisco Match (Plastics, Neurosurg, Ophthalmol, Peds Neuro) require undergrad transcripts.

All other specialties participate in the NRMP, which require neither undergrad or MCAT transcripts.

Even if you are interested in one of the specialties participating in the SF Match, few (if any) programs will put a direct emphasis on undergrad performance. I say direct b/c undergrad grades often correlate with the prestige of the med school you attend, and ranking of your med school can make a difference; moreso for the 'super' competitive specialties.

Hope that helps.
