hey guys, when you are applying for residency programs, do they also look/consider your college grades? Or is it just Step 1 and medical school record?

Nobody asked me to submit college transcripts or asked about my college performance/MCATs. However, I was asked about a prestigious award I got in college. But even still, it was because I listed it as an "honor" on my ERAS application.

Typically that stuff isn't needed. However, one of my classmates applying to ortho was asked some of this info at one program I believe. But it is definitely out of the ordinary.

As someone who shaped up significantly in med school, thankfully, no. All they get from ERAS is where you went to college, the degree, the major, and the dates. No one pays much attention to any of it (in EM, at least -- glad I'm not going for rad/onc or ortho).

I had one interviewer at one program notice that my dates indicated I took more than 4 years and ask why. The only other time college performance came up was when an interviewer basically asked why I'd gone osteopathic, since he assumed from my med school record I could've gone to any med school I'd wanted. My less than graceful response was an amused "you'd think that, wouldn't you?" and a few words about my college's grading. (I can talk a better game about what I gained from osteopathic school when it's phrased that way, but I have a hard time stretching the truth about why I went that route when the short answer is "they were willing to take me.")

If you go to the same medical school and undergraduate school, sometimes the transcript includes all grades. Just FYI, I don't think this is a big issue for most programs / fields.

yea I did a semester away as an undergrad at my current med school, which was the worst semester grade-wise of my entire college career because I basically blew it off to enjoy the city. Fast forward 6 yrs and its getting sent with my med school transcript. D'oh! I keep getting asked at interviews how I managed to take Italian Cinema while in med school.

I have the same situation-- I studied in France with Columbia (in 1999!), and have taken a couple of liberal arts classes since med school began. It has placed me in the enviable position of being able to say my "GPA" is 4.0, even though P&S is graded on the H/P/F system. 🙂 But seriously, it doesn't count for anything.

And there are always rumors of specific programs who do request everything from college-- integrated plastics at UVa, for example, wants everything back through your SATs-- but they are definitely the exception to the rule.

There were some rad onc programs that made me send my college transcript outside of ERAS when I applied. Out of the 60 programs, I think < 5 required this though.
You applied to 60 rad onc programs?
