How can I find out why a residency was placed on probation?
How can I find out how long a residency has been on probation?

I think this is a perfectly reasonable question to ask the PD at that institution if it is a program at which you are considering interviewing.

I think most of the time it's for work hours violations...it seems like that is one of the few things the ACGME is actually able to measure, or tries to. I mean, you never see a program on probation for "substandard teaching" or anything. Kind of sad, when you think about it. I think it's fair game to ask about this at your residency interview. If you don't want to ask the PD, then ask one of the chief residents or another resident.

Hmmm...this information used to be available on ACGME, although at times it was vague.

At any rate, programs are required to tell interviewees that they are on probation, so you probably won't have to ask.

How long is listed on the ACGME website, the link is in the above posts. Usually probation is for 6-12 months, either you fix the problem and get off or you get closed. Most programs fix the problems, at least on paper...

Why is not listed, and you'll need to speak to the PD. If you're worried you can contact them by email or phone first to decide if you'll interview there, but the PD is clearly going to put the best spin on it possible. Honestly, some of the ACGME decisions seem completely arbitrary. Sounds like clinical evaluations in 3rd year all over again....

Even with the spin, do you think most PDs are honest about the reason? Also, how long can you be on probation? There's a program at my school that was put on probation, had another site visit and is still on probation. I wonder how in danger they are of closing.
