Do residency programs give preference to students from their own medical schools, or does that not matter? For example, if two students with essentially the same board scores, grades, letter of recs, etc are applying to the University of X COM IM residency program spot, and one is from the Univ of X COM while the other is from a different school, will the student from Univ of X have the preference or advantage?

Doesn't work that way. An osteopathic school doesn't necessarily have a residency attached to it. There is so much more criteria they use in choosing residents. Personality has a factor in it if candidates are close in other aspects.

Not really... they'll give preference to applicants that they know, basically people that have rotated through there tend to have a better chance as long as they had a good rotation.

I remember we used to go through applications and pick out the ones that we remembered who had a good rotation. You can look great on paper but still be bad clinically.
