Applying for a residency of your choice is an year long process that takes meticulous planning and an organized approach. Before starting the application process, it is a good idea to know the programs that suit your interests and find out whether you meet their criteria. I have spent a lot of money applying to programs without paying much attention to their program criteria only to find out that my application was not even considered.

I would advise all of you to contact the programs by email to get the latest info on their program so that you know their criteria. If you do not have the time to send all the emails, you can browse through the program statements posted in sites like residentscafe.com where the programs are sent an email and the response from the programs are posted. The secret of success in the match, in my opinion is- "Start early and plan ahead!".

Thanks for this post Drprt! This is so true. I know that I will probably return home for residency (especially since my mother is older), so it's definitely to my advantage to check into program requirements early. And thank you for the link. I was a little disappointed though with the minimum amount of information listed on the site (but it's all about what people contribute, I know). You can also find information on residencies at the AMA website through their FREIDA search:
http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/2997.html. There is general contact information, as well as links to the websites where you can find more detailed programmatic info (on some, not all).

Couldnt say it better!! Thats always been my opinion and what I'm even doing that right now!!!

I was wondering, can I apply for IM in Mayo, and then EM in say Mount SInai?
WIll the ppl in MAyo find out I'm applying for different things?
Or is it better that I think really hard, and apply for only one, say IM for all my applications?

You can apply to both, and neither will know. If you apply to both at the same hospital they are likely to find out.
