Hi all. I am a non-EU citizen. I obtained my medical degree from Ireland. However, I am currently doing internship training in my home country. I am interested in doing my residency training in either the US, Canada, or Europe.
I just want to enquire on which is the best of these to do residency in terms of quality and also in terms of the chances of me getting in.

Does getting my medical degree in Ireland make Europe more of an option or not since I'm obtaining my licence from a non-EU country now?

Would really appreciate the advice! 🙂

If you aren't a Canadian citizen, then Canada isn't an option for the most part. Unless you are Saudi, and your country pays for your residency. But i have no idea how that process works.

US will be your best bet, take the USMLES and go for it.

Doing your medical degree in Ireland doesn't help unless you have EU citizenship unfortunately. Your best bet is in the US. I would write the USMLEs try to do well on observerships/electives and apply.

Like UBC said, Canada requires you to be a citizen to apply for residency and it is incredibly difficult for citizens even who did not graduate from a Canadian or US MD school. Canada does have some limited options in some subspecialties aka fellowships for foreign trained physicians but they tend to be very competitive, require the completion of your residency training and usually take only the best.

Really? Not even the UK?

Well if you did your medical degree in the UK you can stay in the UK but that is UK rules, if you did it in Ireland you need EU citizenship to go to the UK.
