To those who have applied to residency programs or are already in them,

Does state residency (e.g. CA, HI, or NY) affect your chances of getting into residency programs?

My situation right now is that I'm deciding which med school to go to. I hold HI residency, but may change to NJ residency to qualify for the in-state tuition. If I want to apply to a residency program in HI, will this hurt my chances of getting it?

Residency programs do not generally evaluate applicants in terms of state residency the way med school admissions do.If you go to school in NJ as a state resident that should have no direct bearing on your eligibility for obtaining a residency in another state.Sometimes there are regional preferences, and residency programs prefer applicants who have strong local ties.If you really want to end up in a particular state then going to med school there is a plus but not a must, otherwise do away rotations to show your interest in their region and program.

I don't think it will matter. I think what matters is that you can show the residency program that you would want to be there over somewhere else. Example:

Let's say you have 2 people. One grew up in Los Angeles, the other grew up in New york. They both go to Ohio State, get residency there, same grades, etc, etc,. Then they apply to residencies, and both interview at Cedar Sinai in Los Angeles. Now, Cedar Sinai wants teh best students in their program, so they will rank the person who came from Los Angeles higher than the other one for the sole reason that it is likely that the Los Angelino is more likely to rank Cedar Sinai higher and get in there.
