I know talking or asking about cosmetic training at a residency program is a kiss of death, but I was hoping some of you would be willing to share information about which programs do and don't offer cosmetic training as part of the standard resident curriculum.

I do realize that there are procedural fellowships for dermatologists who want to have a greater exposure/more training in cosmetics. However, wanting adequate cosmetic training in residency is not rooted in a desire to open up a cosmetic-only practice (besides, these are rare), but rather to be well-rounded and to have a broad scope of practice.

Dermatology is a sellers market, so I don't think any med student will not apply or rank a program just because it offers little cosmetic training, but it may help students make their rank lists next year.

I was hoping med students who just matched and current or past residents would be willing to share information about how much cosmetic exposure different programs have. Feel free to post below or to PM me.

The easy answer is that they all do. I forget the exact specifications but programs are required to have hands-on exposure to vascular laser and at least direct observation of most of the cosmetic procedures people have come to expect of dermatologists: botox, soft tissue filler, ablative laser, etc. Whether or not that represents "adequate" cosmetic training is the real question.

At the risk of coming off like a stodgy academic professor, I would highly suggest NOT ranking programs based on their cosmetic exposure. Very few (and likely zero) programs can make a real claim that cosmetic dermatology is their forte. And if it is, I would be highly skeptical if they tell you the residents are doing the procedures.
