which residencies offer the best quality of life (low stress/hours)? do any of them allow you to have a life outside of medicine (like you had in college for example) or are they generally all very time-consuming. thanks in advance.

How could you guys forget Derm! 🙄

Emergency Medicine. Though certainly not to same degree as some of the above.

Hmmm...while all of the above are good examples, I can't think of ANY residency which would allow one to have a lifestyle like they had in college (as the OP asked).

After all, residency is a job, a job with long hours, even those more lifestyle friendly specialities. Are there any out there with only 18 or so contact hours per week (not including studying)? 😀

Tonight my mom asked if I had a summer vacation after internship. Ha Ha! I had to laugh.

Reminds me of when my mom thought we got holidays and weekends off (ie, when I complained about not having time to fully move into my apartment when starting internship). 😀

I know miserable psychiatrists and radiologists and happy surgeons, ob-gyns and orthopods.

Doing what you love has the best lifestyle. With the 80 -hour cap, even surgeons can have a life (somewhat).

That being said, EM is the superior specialty in terms of time on and time off. (totally unbiased opinion)
