I had a question regarding residency positions. If someone has completed a prelim year in gen surgery, and would like to apply to gen surg residency, where can they look for a listing of open R2 positions. Does this require going through the match process or do you contact programs individually?

Thank you for your time.

Most surgery programs do not accept prelim programs for PGY-1 credit. Hence, most people who complete surgery prelims must go through the match again to get a categorical spot. There is no rule about this -- if you can find a program to accept you as a PGY-2, you're good to go.

Thank you both for your replies. On a related note, if one wanted to match into a residency program like radiology that has a 1 year prelim req., and one has completed the prelim year, is it possible to apply directly to the program and if so, does this go through the match process?

Thanks again.

That might be a bit of a stretch. In fact, with my limited n=2, I'd disagree. A prelim year at a lot of surgery programs is no different than the categorical year. Plus, if a program has an opening at the R-2 level they'd have a fairly small pool of applicants if they only wanted people that had a categorical R1 year. Changing fields away from GS isn't uncommon but I'd imagine switching from one categorical program to another is sort of rare. The best place to looks for openings in GS is:

Good luck. There will be openings throughout the year, you just have to be on the ball and find out about and apply to them early.

I'd have to agree with Pir8DeacDoc here...the ability to have your Prelim GS year "count" depends on whether or not it meets the ACS requirements for categorical training. Our non-designated Prelims did the exact same rotations as the Categoricals so it was easy for them (well, relatively so) to get an PGY-2 position if one were available. If you completed a PGY-1 year which did not meet the ACS requirements, then you may only get partial or no credit for the year.

The Association for Program Directors in Surgery will be the best place to find open positions listed on the web.

Again, thank you for all your advice!
