Hey there SPT's and PT's! Wow, it's crazy coming back to this forum - as a third year student - when I used this as a previous undergraduate, applying to PT schools. Two totally different worlds. I had an inkling to do a residency, but I wasn't sure if I would still be interested after 3 years of school.
I completed an inpatient rehab clinical for 14 weeks - and while it was challenging, and made it to "advanced intermediate" (not entry level quite yet) - I loved the hard work, the intensity, the infinite learning opportunities, and the relationship building between patients - other PT's and other disciplines. I have a great interest in obtaining my NCS - primarily through completing a residency, but I started to struggle with test taking in graduate school - now with an average GPA of 3.1 (yeah I know, not great). I know that if I don't get into a residency, I could get a job at an IPR/acute care facility with a strong mentoring program, and learn this way until I have gained enough hours to sit for NCS.
I have spoken with my advisor and she has told me- that it's not necessarily impossible to get into a neuro residency. I obviously wouldn't be getting into Emory's or Shirley Ryan's residency - as these programs are much more didactic/research based. I am currently taking a neuro elective and am actively involved in reviewing research weekly/as well as presenting. Likewise, I have a well-rounded personality and interview well (per my advisor, not just me saying that haha). I have worked 3 part-time jobs throughout my schooling in graduate school as well - while also volunteering and holding an office position for my class. What advice would you give me? Are there certain programs you recommend I apply to or look into? I have been emailing programs expressing interest and asking specific programs.
