Just a few questions on residency...(I'll be hope to be attending DMU so I would prefer residency info pertaining to and osteopath or an osteopath taking the MD boards.)

What are some of the most competitve?
Least competitive?
What are the best for docs coming from DMU?
I am interest so far in 1. Radiology 2. Pathology 3. Derm.
Should I try to shadow from these specialties before med. school, or just work at a hospital?

I would really appreciate and advice!

Well, radiology and dermatology would be two of the most competitive residencies. (Derm is #1.) 🙂

As a DO you will have an uphill climb getting any of the three. I have definitely heard of DOs (and have met some) who get quality path residencies and jobs, but they do have a tougher road to get there - it helps to have more experience in the field, or research, or great letters of reference (things that would help anyway, but seem to be more crucial for a DO). Don't know of any doing derm or rads but my experience with these fields is limited.

Tougher road to get to path? Never heard that before. Path is one of the easiest residencies to get. I have yet to meet a DO say they didn't match in Path. However, radiology and derm are difficult. Plenty of great DO's enter AGME (MD) Radiology residencies, but that is a tough match for anyone(MD or DO). I have heard rumors of a handful of DO's matching ACGME derm but I admit that is rare. The thing you have to remember is that there are osteopathic residencies in Rads and derm. So DO's enter these fields every year at osteopathic hospitals.

So is an osteopathic radiologist working in an osteopathic hospital the same (i.e. same work enviro., same pay, same duties) as a MD radiologist working in an allopathic hospital?

Yes they are the same in every respect. Of course an osteopathic radiologist can work at any hospital though and vice versa. I have seen several MD attending at DO hospitals in all fields.

You will find Family Medicine to be the least competitive these days. The recent Match showed demand for these positions has continued to decline. As far as the lesser competitive programs, think primary care.
