Residency salaries

I'm going to be a new student this fall, and I know it's a bit premature, but I'm curious: what do residents actually make? I know it must vary from specialty to specialty, but about average...what do they pay you post-graduation? Thanks a ton!

the salary increases per annum. the four salary-zones are: northeast, central, southeast, and west (forget wyoming, etc).

ne is highest paid, and i believe central is least. this data is at nrmp.org somewhere i believe. or i may have read it from a book. be sure to factor in cost of living for these areas. its not like the south is being cheated. ? (or is it)

Gmendese - I would say that in general the salary range is between $35,000-$55,000. Your salary increases every year of your residency. Location is also a big factor as well. I know that in CA, the salaries tend to be lower than Boston. The salary does not vary with regards to specialites within the same program. For instance, in the Harvard system, all residents are paid the same regardless of whether they are at Brigham, MGH, BID, or Spaulding. Most of the above information is correct. Although the region averages may vary, there is also a lot of variablity in each region. Some of the areas that aren't as desirable (especially smaller cities) actually pay more. I know that most of the Wisconsin residencies start around 38-40K and go up to 42-45K by 5th year. Chicago ones actually pay a little less from what I saw. Cali programs were starting at 34-36K because more people wanna go there for the weather.

Depending on the area, specialty, and residency program, you can add to your income by doing moonlighting at other hospitals. My sister is an OB/GYN resident in Cali and makes an extra 15K in moonlighting money.

Paying different residencies salaries based upon their work hours is an issue that has been broached by some of the resident organizations.

Any thoughts?
