Hello ! I am an incoming 4th year student and was wondering when the official start date for residency is? I understand even thought the official date is " July 1st" there is generally orientation held 2-3 weeks prior. I am planning on going on vacation and have family weddings scheduled June 13, 2025. Is this still a safe range considering this is 2 weeks earlier than the offficial start date?

Usually orientation the week before but some programs are 1.5 2 weeks orientation. You really won’t know until you match and know what the institution’s orientation schedule for residents is.

Do you think they will require people to come early as June 9 or majority of programs start 2 weeks before ?

Thank you so much! I will only be available after June 15 which is 2 weeks out from the start date. I just want to make sure I won't get dropped from a program if they started orientation earlier

I haven’t heard or seen any program require you to be present in person 2 weeks ahead but keep in mind there’s a lot of onboarding paperwork and immunizations and all that stuff leading up through emails and everything so make sure you stay on top of it. Most programs start getting you onboard almost right after match

Would a program drop you if lets say they had orientation the first week of june or the second week and there are trips and weddings scheduled that you can't change the date of? I'm just worried because I'm unable to move certain dates do to family events. It's stressful because as an MS4 you don't know where you're going to end up and my school's graduation is generally somewhere in the last 2 weeks of May. The only vacation time would be the first 2 weeks of June assuming the last 2 weeks of June are left for orientation. However some people have been starting earlier so I'm not sure what to do

This^^

Any program with MD/DO residencies (the kind of program you want) usually does about 1-1.5wks of orientation for incoming residents.

For places with only podiatry and not ACGME programs or real GME dept (VA hospitals, small hospitals), they can do whatever they want, but it should be about the same timespan.

I'm at a big academic center and we start the same date / time with MD/DO/DDS etc. Be prepared to make time for your on-boarding stuff like physical and drug screening though cause that can affect you start date.

This will depend on the program that you'll match into. Like many have stated here, most programs will start orientation a week or two before the actual residency start date (July 1st). Once matched, you'll have to contact your residency director or coordinator about when orientation starts and let him/her know that you have a family wedding to attend at said date, and see where you stand from there. I would skip the vacation totally if that timeframe coincides too close to orientation. More likely you are safe for most programs and the director will understand and approve your situation. But be very cautious! This is your career and they will note of your work ethics and everything day one. Starting out like this immediately puts a dent in your image as a resident and your program (director, coresidents, attendings, administrators, coordinator, etc) takes excuses or missed days very seriously. It is very frowned upon. The program may make you graduate residency later (one month later) if you don't start on time with everyone else, including orientation. It's almost like starting a resident in August instead of July, and I know from several programs where residents graduate later because of onboarding things were incomplete (i.e. License/permit, drug test, paperwork/reports, ID cards, full orientation, etc).

Any time off two weeks before July 1st should be okay. But as stated, it depends on your program. The official start date for all types of residency is July 1st of each year.
