Is there any easy way to find out residency start dates? Other than contacting programs directly, because I feel like that's a little presumptuous/may put me in a bad light before I even apply. I'm trying to figure out the best time to get married next May/June. Obviously May would be easiest for me, but it would mean a lot of family would have a hard time getting there when kids are in school, etc.

P.S. I'm applying med-peds. The earliest start date I heard for this year is June 12.

I've heard start dates for this year ranging from June 7 to June 24th.

Just get married in May. At worst, you end up with a longer honeymoon. At best, you avoid pissing off your program and/or messing up your wedding.

Agreed. One of my friends started June 5, or something crazy early.

Early... early is never too soon for one who patiently waits. In my program we are to go in June 10 for orientation, official start day is of course July 1, but the PC kindly suggested that I (I assume we) could do an observership in May, so that will be done starting the 15th of this Month. According to the PC, the observership isn't mandatory but was recommended.

Is your program 100% IMGs?

Not only have I never heard of this "observership" nonsense from any of my (MD or DO) friends, but I can't imagine any of us would put up with that without a good reason.

I have orientation starting June 10, and first day of work June 17. I never expected to start so early, but the great thing about it is I end June 15 next year. That will give me a little bit of time to get to my advanced position.

😕... I know a lot of other schools finish earlier, but I don't graduate until the last week of May and finish rotations a few days earlier. Doesn't your program have anybody coming from schools that actually have school going on in May?

From talking to my classmates, mid-June is the most common but there are some programs that start very early in June so it is hard to count on anything.

Hi Raryn & wagy27, thank you for your responses, your opinions are highly regarded & welcomed with me. However, the program I'm in is not 100% IMG although your estimation wasn't that far off. I see the residency in the following fashion: I am a beggar and if I ask for a plate and am given a crumb I'd be highly satisfied. Ultimately, completing any ACGME accredited program will allow me to serve the underserved as I've always wanted to + couple such status with other elements such as computer programming , consulting, military work, etc.
I've had several red flags and multiple life experiences not typical to your everyday doctor and at first I saw them as obstacles until I finally woke up and smelled the coffee, realizing that no one is perfect and these experiences helped shape me.
With respect to the super-early 'start' date and the amended observership, for me it's quite the honor to go in early. I figure that it cannot hurt and if the end result consists of at least learning 1 thing, then it is not in vain. The observership status is only for 2 weeks (although I will likely attempt to prolong it till official orientation date) an at the moment I'm doing nothing -- it's an unpaid position and quite frankly, if needed, I' was willing to do whole residency term without pay. Of course the aforementioned is just a literal representation of my will, not actual real terms. In essence, I was looking for one sole opportunity and not the privilege to choose amongst them. I am glad a program director, coordinator, and the respectable staff believed in me. I don't mind the 'extra' work and appreciate your concern and thoughts as well.

Cheers.

We start June 19th for orientation, M-F, no weekends, paid

Start 1st day of work on July 1.

No clue where to figure it out...my friends started orientation anywhere from mid-june to June 27th

I have to say I think this is pretty much BS. ...

I tend to agree. Unfortunately it seems like a lot of this stuff is increasingly hospital mandated and getting worse every year. Even since I started residency 3 years ago our orientation has expanded exponentially. There are now mandatory team training sessions, 2 days of orientation to the hospital EMR, simulations, and sessions on the various ACGME core competencies.

Our actual residency program orientation is about 2 half-days of meetings and paperwork. The rest is all mandated by the hospital GME office and takes over a week.

Unpaid orientation June 17 through June 21st (M-F) then that Saturday we have to meet with our program PD at her house, and then go to the hospital to stat first rotation Sunday June 23rd. 🙄

We don't get paid for the 6 "mandatory" days prior to June 23rd and I don't even get a day off to myself before starting on a Sunday of all days. Thankfully my prelim will end June 22nd and will be happy to move out to my advanced position.
