I have heard that some programs subsidize resident housing. Does anyone have an idea of which schools do? I am curious how a resident with a family could move to Boston, SF, NYC or even Dallas and afford to live in a decent neighborhood and do a residency.

The NYC programs in Manhattan (e.g. Cornell, NYU, St. Vincent's) do offer housing for residents and families. Most of those programs buy out a nearby apartment complex and sell it for less. Some of these subsidized housing are still expensive but still better than if you found a place on your own. I've been told that you must request early b/c the apartments fill up quick. The neighborhood is very good in the NYC programs I mentioned. Check each program's website very carefully regarding housing. BTW, I heard that Dallas is very affordable that you don't need subsidized housing. The cost of living in Texas is much less than the other cities you mentioned.

True about Dallas, I lived in Plano before medical school, but it would still be a significant increase from where I am now. THanks for the NYC info.

I'm a resident at Winthrop University Hospital on Long Island and our housing is absolutely amazing. Never had to worry from Day 1. We were set up with the housing option of our choice promptly prior to beginning our intern year. All of our housing complexes are within 5 minutes walking distance to the hospital. We have 2 apartment buildings directly across the street from the hospital as well as garden apartments down the road. Winthrop owns houses as well which you can request if you have a family. All of this is heavily subsidized! I never have to worry about rent. Not to mention, the apartments are big and well taken care of. We get to take advantage of this otherwise expensive place to live (b/c of its proximity to the LIRR/Manhattan, safety, places to eat/shop) for next to nothing in cost. It is really a must to have this security when you are in residency.

You do realize the OP asked this question eight years ago, don't you. 🙄

But, thanks for taking the time to post a commercial for your residency program's housing. 🙄
