I failed my Step 1 the first time, but did very well the 2nd time I took it. My question is, will have to report both scores when I apply for residency?

Moved to Residency Forum as this is a residency issue. You can follow and post there.

Maybe this is a more appropriate place to ask my question: how many people drop out of medical school when they find out they didn't do well on their Step 1s and feel like their dreams of certain specialties are shot to $h!t?

i would say that's pretty rare - for most people, a 2 year investment with loans and everything is enough to seal the deal - you might have to readjust the specialty you are considering but no one really just packs their bags and leaves after failing step 1 one time.....now, if they fail a few times, admin may pack their bags for them

Very few. Many people, once they do 3rd year rotations, find out that the specialty they were hoping to get into before they took Step 1 is not all its cracked up to be, and go for some other specialty. Sometimes, this other specialty is less competitive than the one they were hoping to get into before they saw their Step 1 score.

Very few.

I suspect many people will know, deep down, if they're competitive-residency caliber. For example, someone gunning for Derm/Plastics isn't going to suddenly be shocked when they score a 180 on Step 1.
