Residency without an internship (Internal)

My husband is a small animal vet, he just graduated in 2008. He currently works in private practice, but he still thinks he might want to do an Internal Medicine Residency. I've read that you need 2 or 3 years experience if you didn't do an internship. Any ideas on this?

Most programs require a rotating internship or "equivalent experience". They usually don't specifically define what that means, although the conventional wisdom is that 2-3 years of general practice will suffice. However, for the more competitive clinical residencies the trend is that it's getting less and less common to take someone who hasn't done a rotating internship, regardless of private practice experience.
