I am a 3rd year med student and I am wondering how in the world you can avoid moving all over the place? Don't get the wrong idea cause I wouldn't be in medicine if it weren't my life but my family is extremely important to me too. My husband is a cop and it is so frustrating that I have no idea where I'm going to wind up. If he gets a job somewhere at this point I have no guarentee that I'll get to be placed there as well. Any suggestions? I want to do an ER residency and I was thinking about doing my 4th year in a place like LA or somewhere else in Southern CA b/c there are many hospitals in a close proximity that offer good ER programs and I figured if I could do a majority, if not all, of my 4th year rotations there then my chances of getting to stay there for residency would be better. I can't believe that there aren't a significant amount of people out there with the same problem????? HELP!! 😱

yes, i will also likely have this same problem in about 4 years when I finish med school. My fiance still has 2 yrs of undergrad left, so when she applies to grad school i will only be a MSIII. Then I am not sure what we will do when I start residency... I was hoping to find some place close... ironically, i am also interested in EM...

edit: oops, i posted under her SDN name...

I've been worried about this too. Especially if you have to consider things like fellowship and/or post-doc into the mix (I'm going into internal medicine, so I could have several more moves ahead). But, one of the suggestions that people have been offering me is to shoot for a city that works well for both you and your spouse. I don't know as much about the number of available EM spots, but I imagine you'd have a lot to choose from in Southern CA.
