Hey,
I was wondering if people could talk a bit about their residency and time AFTER the 4/5 years of classes and rounds. How much time you spent, what you did (I know this depends on your interests) and then what were the boards like and the final exam, basically any information on the final steps. I know this is vague! sorry! I have done research and know what is theoretically done, but what was your experience? Thanks for your help everyone!

My residency was 3 years. It was usually 60-70 hours a week in the hospital, around 12 hr/day M-F, less on weekends. I didn't have any primary call after hours, but would come in about once a week to do a surgery.

I typically spent at least 1 hr/night reading, reviewing or researching cases.

The board exams were hard but fairly straightforward. I definitely had to study but I felt well prepared from residency.

The hardest part for me was doing a graduate degree at the same time. This usually involved taking 1 class per semester. It was often difficult to get to class when you have appointments, surgeries and patients in ICU. The non-vet graduate students and instructors had no idea what you were dealing with -- they go to 1 class a day and spend the rest of the time studying and working on their project/thesis.

Would you be willing to say what specialty your residency was in?
