What is this about private schools not caring about residency? bc i def dont want to do residency. Although I might want to specialize AFTER working a couples of years (bc I want to make some money open up a practice then go back to school)

Also I have this great opportunity to do real lab research with this orthodontist at NYU. it's actually a fellowship program, but they let me get an internship BEFORE DENTAL SCHOOL. My question is, can i put that on my resume if i want to apply for a specialty after i finish dental school and go work for a year or so and then go back to school? Will it be "too old"to be relevant.

You are confused about what residency means. Private schools don't usually care about what state you are a resident of. This has nothing to do with doing a residency after dental school.

haha yeah..i feel stupid now.

Typically, it's what research and internships you do during your dental school career that are applicable to residency programs for specialization programs. Specialization programs want to see how you can balance the core dental curriculum with research/extracurricular activities. Your internship with NYU would most likely be towards applications to get into dental school. However, it will never hurt to put it on your application for specializations.
