Hey everyone, I was recently looking at my medical school's (MD) residency list that corresponds to the only level 1 trauma center in our state. About 1/3 of the residents are from Caribbean Medical Schools and the remainder is from our medical school. My residency training spot will be decided for me by the Navy so no chance of doing it here, but I was wondering: if our residency program has Caribbean IMGs, does it say much about the program itself or am I just being conceited? In no way am I saying they got a crappier education than I did but with the stigma associated with Caribbean schools on here from different admins and mods, can't help but wonder.

Because of the bias against the Caribbean, those that match tend to be the top students that generally have equivalent or better step scores than most US trained MDs or DOs. The program may be less selective than others, but to equate it as being inferior would be incorrect.

You're not "conceding" anything. You might be accused of being "conceited", but I don't think you are.

Some programs that are in more rural States have historically had difficulty attracting AMGs. Carib grads have filled these residencies for decades, and PDs know what they're getting from a high stat Big 4 student since they've had so many. When ranking candidates, they know they can snag a top SGU or Ross student much more easily than many mediocre out of state AMG candidates, so they build their rank lists accordingly. It might not be a bad program, but rather just a less popular one with AMGs that has left the PDs playing it safe with their rank lists so they end up with high stat Carib grads instead of scramble candidates.

Thank you

I remember looking at the resident list for the hospital I worked at before becoming a medical student. The internal medicine group was about 70% Caribbean schools (mainly SGU, Ross) with probably 20% from its medical school, 10% from other random MD/DO schools. I know that the nurses I worked with weren't always happy with some of the interns, but I'm sure that's consistent just about anywhere.

I think you need to remember that the IMGs getting residencies at academic hospitals are toward the top of their classes and easily comparable with their AMG colleagues. If anything it might say that a hospital isn't "super competitive", but I don't know if it is necessarily an indication of a low quality institution.

yeah,It's just a joke - not to be take srs.thank you

Is there a difference between an IMG that got a 250 on step 1 and a AMG that got a 250 on step 1 and both did their rotations in the US? (I'm being facetious lololol)
