I think this would be extremely helpful for us. There are a lot of overly anxious applicants right now. With those with 10+ you're already set. With us around 4-6 it's a very stressful time. It'd just be nice to get an idea how much "shuffling" actually goes on.

Thank you so much!!

Keep in mind that a lot of the superstars with 10+ interviews are probably waiting on a lot of the top tier programs that still haven't given out interviews (BPEI, MEEI, Wills, JSEI, WUSTL, Emory, to name a few). There will likely be a lot of shuffling once these programs hand out offers.

Yea...have any actual numbers though from your experience?

Trust me tons of interviews will start to be turned down and more invites will go out. I cancelled/turned down 22 interviews, starting about now (I over applied). A lot of movement of interviews will start this month. There is no reason to worry.

I don't know...how many ppl are there like you though? Are there really that many cancellations that go out? There's just no way to know and it's all hearsay. Especially someone in your shoes, you were a top applicant and didn't have to worry at all. I have half as many interviews that are basically needed to assure a great chance to match. Why would my interview # suddenly double in November when I have only gotten x many over a few months? I am doubtful that many extra interviews actually go out since I've tried searching on SDN and haven't come up with much.

Still wondering if some other residents will chime in who can actually comment on interviews they got on Nov 1 and onward?

Not a resident, but I've spoken to three residents who'll be starting Ophtho residency in 2014 about when they heard about interviews. These three had above ophtho average step 1 scores, some research/pubs but no publication in ophtho specifically, good grades....

All three said they received at least half of their interviews in November (4-8) for a total of 8-16 invites for the cycle. Just an n=3, but I hope this helps.

I agree with the Ophtho2014's message above. Three of the top programs are done this week but there are still several programs with pending invites. I think the cancellations will begin 11/9 onwards.

i'm a second year ophtho resident (pgy-3).

i got about 16-17 interviews total. attended and ranked 14 programs. i had about 6 interviews by the end of october / early november. i would not worry if i were you guys. i still received interviews from good places late november/early december. i know it's hard when you're going through the process. been there done that. just try to stay calm and positive. more interviews will go out in november.

for those who wonder about my stats. i was not a superstar applicant. decided on ophtho late. barely did any ophtho research (no ophtho publication, barely had publication in other area). step 1 was average. took step 2 early and did well. went to a med school with a top ophtho program. matched at a top 15-20 place (my #2 choice). did not have faculty who called for me. felt terrible the whole season due to the number of interviews and places i had compared to my classmates. in the end i still did fine.

attributed my match success to luck (and maybe i interviewed well). who knows. if i were to do it again, i would try not to compare myself to other applicants during the interview trail. be positive and confident and you will be ok.

thanks for posting!! This is super helpful, especially for us - non-superstar applicants. Breaking down ur interview offers by month is also very helpful. My profile is very similar to yours, hopefully some of ur success rubs off 🙂

How many programs did u apply to?

Would be nice if other resident chimed in, and provided numbers too 🙂

i applied to ~75 programs total. coming from a class full of superstar applicants (with either glowing step 1 score or year off for research), it was very intimidating and frustrating when classmates kept asking me how many interviews i got and where i was invited to. don't let it get to you.

in the end, everyone can only match at 1 place. you can end up matching very high on your list and the superstar applicant can match lower on their list and well, the number of interviews and prestigious invites don't matter so much then.

I was a very middle-of-the-road applicant, and applied to about 50 programs. By November 1, I had 8 invitations, and by the end of the season I interviewed at 12 total places. I remember getting a flood of invitations toward the middle/end of November, and had to turn away a few. I also was pretty persistent in emailing programs I was interested in directly and updating them with new info about my research or Step 2 score, and I actually feel this helped me get a good number of interviews. I matched at my #1, which is a solid middle-tier program in a region I really wanted to be in.

Hope this helps! Don't despair, it's not the end of the season yet!

Anyone actually seeing this play out yet? 🙂

Would be great if some of the residents could chime in on which programs sent out additional invites in the 2nd half of November in the past years.
So far, Case and Penn State seem to have sent out a 3rd round of invites. I am just wondering if any of the top tier programs send additional invites too.
