Resident's Opinion in Selecting

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
mostly an inverse relationship with program size. yet, regardless of program, a negative comment from a resident to the selection committee has far more weight than a positive one.

yeah i think it's highly program-specific. at some places one or several residents interview and they get significant say. i'm aware of at least one program where residents get a "half-vote" vs. attendings get a full vote (not my program, i'm not exactly sure how their voting system works). i think many programs will at least ask the residents "what did you think?" in my experience, there are often 0-2 applicants on an interview day that stick out as being really great and 0-2 that stick out as being not so great.

At our program, all residents are assigned a specific question to ask the interviewee. Responses are scored, and then all the scores are added up for all the different questions for each interviewee. At the end, it's rather apparent when there are usually 2 or 3 people everyone really likes, and there are usually 2-3 people people REALLY don't like/think is odd.

I should clarify that we only give a score based on the answer to the question (and not whether or not we like the person). However, we can then add comments like, "oh so and so showed up late all the time...isn't really interested...is just into this for the lifestyle...always wanted to leave early...etc." Those comments go into the "soft scoring" of interviewees after a preliminary table is made up of all the applicants and their scores for each question.

Our chiefs interview the applicants, though I'm not sure how much their vote counts.

Our PD did specifically tell all of us that our "job" during the pre-interview dinners is to screen the applicants for anyone who we don't think would fit into our program/people we absolutely would not want to work with.

Opinions can filter to other programs too...derm is a small world.

Sounds like it varies but obviously bad opinions hold.

How much do you think the residents opinion of you on aways mattered?

The residents opinion of you matters a lot on aways. Don't blow them off...as I've seen from the butt-kissers that are only nice to the attendings...really funny to watch actually.

Yeah agree, but don't worry, it's not like surgery where a lot more stock is put in who the residents want and were your away makes/break you.
