Hi Everyone,

I have a question with regards to quiting the current residency. I am moving to the next year and I have signed the contract. However, I wish to leave in the next 2 months or so.What is the minimum notice I need to give.I am leaving for personal reasons. Is it something which the PD makes an individual choice. Please let me know as to what you think or share your experiences.Any input will be appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

I do not know the exact way. I guess you should inform the PD. Did you find any position for the next year. If not you should give a valid reason for quitting. The Pd of the new program can call the present PD. So you should leave in good terms. So which position are you leaving now?

Hmm.
The match results just came out.
You're just finishing your intern year in a categorical IM residency.
You've expressed your desire to do radiology in previous threads.
And now you want to leave your residency for "personal reasons".

It sounds to me that you've just used the IM residency for a free prelim year and are jumping ship to a radiology program that accepted you. Considering that you're going to potentially screw your comrades in the IM program by leaving, I'd be loath to give you any advice.

Angry are we? Wow!

Talk to the PD. All you need is for him/her to give you the OK. I would be shocked if you were going into another residency since most require you to get a letter from the PD saying it is ok.

Bottom line is talk to the PD.

You really can't blame the resident for wanting to switch. Sure some factors are out of the program's control (like the person wants a higher income in the end) but that is part of what the program is supposed to filter. Two things when done/not-done will allow this problem to exist:

1) Going after people who are less committed to the specialty because they are "more" qualified in the eyes of the program.

2) Not providing/composing a residency program that makes the interns enjoy being in that specialty. If the intern feels that everyone above him is miserable, I can totally understand if he/she wants out of that specialty.

There is no solution to this, cause the number of applicants is insane, and filtering less to get more sincere applicants will increase the work load termendously. Best you can do is find a way to get more sincere applicants such as improving the program.

I agree with the two above reasons.

1) There was a resident at my home institution who had super high board scores and matched to EM. After the first year, he switched to radiology.

2) Majority of upper level residents in my program are bitter, and I am glad I am not a categorical!

Inform your PD ASAP. Unlike a barista and the neighborhood coffee shop you should expect to work at least another 2 months after your notice. They may ask you to finish out your intern year. Best of luck.
