Match rate into ophthalmology was 32% for DO seniors last year (of people who got interviews, so likely lower if you count the students who received no interviews). If you can get the MD, you get the MD. Like the above mentioned, new MD vs solid DO is likely a marginal difference, if any, but if you can avoid any bias, I would do it. Even the lowest tier MD schools like California Northstate routinely match students into plastics and ophtho every year.

touro has matched someone into UCSF ortho in the past years and they have a lot of success in the match, being a CA resident, I would very much go to a well-established DO school over a brand new MD school with absolutely no data regarding the match

I saw that, but also I saw that resident’s post where he basically said he turned down a pretty good MD A to stay closer to family. This was on Reddit. He didn’t explicitly say he was in the class of 2024, but the context and clues in the post were too obvious imo.

I really do think that story is an anomaly bc that person was undoubtedly going to excel wherever he went. I have a mutual friend who failed matching ortho from Touro ca.

Ah okay I see, that’s prob true then haha, I’ve known people that went to CA northstate over good DO’s because of the MD, but struggled with it being a new institution, so I always caution about going to a new MD over established DO, just for the MD tag

If you decide you want Ophthal, go to the MD program even if it is new school. Matching ophthal as a DO will be tough, especially now because there are only around 10 out of 523 positions that were DO previously. Most of the DO ophthal programs have closed since the merger. I would stick with the lower cost school.
