Hello all. I found out yesterday I matched into pathology, though I don't know where yet obviously. I'm super excited about finally doing something I'm interested in. I was wondering if anyone knows of any resources for a new PGY1 path resident. Maybe a website, blog, or book that talks about things like book recommendations, ways to make the transition of your first few months smoother, how best to learn path (since it's so different from most of medical school) and just general advice.

Thanks in advance.

A ton of threads on this, try a search. Consensus is that "the practice of surgical pathology" by Molavi is the best for surg path.

Congrats. Pathology is a great career. And path residency is a great time in your life. Soak it up my friend.

Oh, and get the Molavi book and a good gross manual like maybe Lester. You'll be set for first year.

Congratulations! Look at as much glass and read as much as possible during your training.

Personally I don't recommend getting a grossing book, but that's because of the two programs I was at there were so many wild deviations from any given "book" that trying to learn grossing from one was far too conflicting with what the program demanded to be useful, and could be to some extent detrimental. Every year there would be a few blowups because some resident did it the way the "book" described but the person they were cutting for didn't want it that way. Essentially all learning about grossing was done in the gross room with either a good PA or a senior resident, and occasionally with an attending. That doesn't mean the books are bad, but there are a lot of local flavors when it comes to grossing certain things, and certain attendings may want certain things different from other attendings. So..if you get such a book, just keep that in mind. Those with good diagrams still -do- have some use by better explaining where certain margins are, etc., as a visual aid.

Pathologyoutlines.com is a good start.

You might wait to see if your program gives PGY-1s any books.

Molavi is good for a PGY-1 to start learning surgpath. People like Lester or Westra for grossing but honestly reading a grossing manual now probably isn't high yield.

I'd say enjoy your freedom before you start. But if you really must read something, reviewing your histo and Robbins is probably enough for now to refine your foundational knowledge. Most programs I know give you an orientation/boot camp anyways. It'll make more sense if you read while you are in a pathology residency.

Do not get a grossing book! Get a good psychiatrist!
