hi all--

i am thinking of retaking the first quarter of general chem, which i took in 1997 and got a c- in. i have already taken the mcat, got an 11 in ps. the opportunity cost is an advanced bio or chem class. any thoughts? i appreciate all input.

Nah, screw it. As long as you're doing well in your advanced courses, shown you know your general stuff from the MCAT.. good stuff. Just say you were smoking pot and getting laid during the finals but really had an A in the class.. they'll understand.

I was in a similar situation when I started my post-bacc classes, but maybe a little worse. I had C-'s in both Bio I and Orgo II (from '95-'96.) I was advised to retake Orgo and to take upper-level bio courses. That was, however, before I took the MCAT - retaking the orgo really helped me prepare for that. How are your other pre-reqs? (i.e. PHYS, ORGO, BIO) If they aren't too bad, I'd go for the upper-level bio or chem.

Congrats on the 11!

Generally, retaking a class is discouraged unless you can truly "overwrite" the grade (some colleges let you totally replace the grade on the transcript but won't make an adjustment to the gpa, but rather average the two). Check with the registrar to find out your college's policy. Id speak with the college prehealth advisor too.

Assuming they just "add" the grade to the transcript and do not average or adjust the gpa (its like you never took it other than a new grade appearing on the transcript), it is discouraged to retake it. It's better to take an upper level course and prove your ability. Which, is evident, you have plenty of.

dont do it man....

we get Cs all the time and still get acceptances. your 11 shows that you can handle the material. so just forget about it and just take your other classes.

and whether or not your school can replace the grade you still have to report it on AMCAS to calculate your AMCAS gpa.
