I have just finished my first semester at a university and I have received all A's except for one class: General Biology 1 (got a C+). Yesterday my Biology 2 teacher told us that if we were to pass Biology 2 and retake Biology 1 afterwards, the improved grade wouldn't be counted in our science and overall GPA (because the curriculum would be out of order)! The improved grade will only be on the transcript. Do Medical schools recalculate the science GPA? Would it be fine to keep moving on (because I'm utterly tired of Biology 1)? My add/drop period ends today, so it would wonderful if I can get immediate feedback. Thanks! 🙂

"Any course with Semester Hours and an AMCAS Letter Grade is calculated into the
AMCAS GPA, regardless of whether the credit is counted toward a degree or has been
counted toward a school-calculated GPA."

"AMCAS counts all attempts of a repeated course."

Look up grades there if you need more info.

Wow someone actually replied! :'D Thank you btown! I feel more reassured now. haha

Retake and ace it will bring it up to a B average in AMCAS GPA. Your final AMCAS GPA will always be lower than your institution GPA, but it will still be better than if you do not retake. If this is your first bio class I think you should retake because you never know how well you'd do in other future bio classes.

I had a C as well but did not retake because at that point I already aced many other bio classes.

I wouldn't retake it especially if you got all A's..I just got a C+ in o-chem so yeah i definitely wouldn't bother bc one or two doesn't really kill you, just my two cents though

@xXIDaShizIXx Haha thanks. ^_^ I was worried that my question was so dumb and possibly repetitive that no one answers it.

@ FattySlug- That's the kind of answer I wanted. I give you a million thanks~ :] I'll be trying to replace my Bio 2 classes with gen eds or another major requirement.

Interesting reply luke587. :O But I agree with FattySlug about the uncertainty of my future bio grades (though I heard that General classes are harder because they tend to be broad). I think I'll just retake it during the summer or later. :/

Definitely, I would have to agree with you. Especially since the OP has "mostly As" 🙂

General Bio I and II are hard because their general and typically are weed out courses, if you take Bio II and improve your grade, say like a B+ or whatever than that looks good because its an "upward trend" going from a C+ to B+/A- would look better than retaking a C+ because honestly one C+ is not a huge deal trust me, don't waste your time retaking it

Wow thanks for your input guys! :'D I must agree that retaking is a waste of time. That's why I was so undecided and desperately joined this website. xD I will continue trying my best and not get a C again! Thanks again! lol I will definitely contribute to this site as I get older.

This is his first semester. How many As could he possibly have? And you don't even know if those As are all from classes that actually matter in admission.

A single C+ in a sea of As will be no problem but we don't know if that will be the case. A retake will help his GPA more than an improvement in the Bio 2.

And I agree with FattySlug again... :S The only classes that matter for admissions are the ones counted in science gpa, right? In that case, I would have only taken Bio I and Chemistry I. :/

Gah the confusion! This is my final decision: Do my best this semester and see what happens. And just retake Bio whenever I have time (e.g. Summer).
