Just curious how you all do it? Is it different at each college with their policies? At my university, we cannot retake anything C or above. I read people suggesting people retaking classes with C's. Am I missing something? I would like to retake a class that I took my Freshman year. I don't know why they wouldn't be thrilled to take my money. 🙂

If there are any more or less reputable places around you can retake there as long as it is the same number of credits and the description is generally the same. I retook a course in which I got a very poor grade at Harvard Extension, for example, and it went over really well with adcoms.

Yea. Go find a college with the best name brand you can (but dont spend a ton of money. find a middle ground between cheap and nice name) and retake the class over the summer. I'd especially recommend this if it is a random C (or two) in your grade as it can change the way they look at you if you can show that it was a bad one semester showing from you, not your normal performance in that class.

Oh ok. I didn't know I could do that. The only problem is that there is only 1 community college near me. Will that be a problem? Also, what if my school does not accept the grade? Does it still go on my transcript?

Still goes to your AACOMAS transcript. Just doesn't go towards your main schools perception of your GPA.

would you recommend retaking C's even though you have ~3.6? it wouldn't really help my gpa

If it has an effect on your sGPA it might be a good idea. That is why I am trying to do it.

well ask yourself this: do you have MD calibur stats (or close to it) even with the C? If so you should definitely retake it. I was turned down at a lot of medical schools because I had a 3.3 sGPA with two C-'s in physics 1 and orgo 1. Just a bad semester for those two classes. Multiple schools asked me why i didnt retake it since I had a 34T on my MCATs and got a B+ in both physics II and orgo II. I felt it proved the two C-'s in one semester was a fluke since they build on the "part ones" and I was an A- student in every other class out there. They rejected me because they didnt want to let anyone in with Cs. They won't ignore or override your C, but they want to see the formality that you did retake it.

Do you want to do DO? In that case decide based on how good your stats are. Since you can override them, you can rewrite history. But if your stats are good enough already (like mine were) they'll accept you without needing to go through the effort of fixing them.

side note: I did get MD acceptances, but not in any area of the US I wanted to go to. Picking DO in my desired region was a much easier decision than you'd think when your other choices were all in a less desirable area (no offense to people of the midwest, but its a poor fit for me). So not all MD schools are tied up on the C, but a few (U of vermont and UMDNJ) were nice enough to tell me that it literally was because their adcom would not admit someone with two C's, no matter how good the rest of the record was.

At 3.5+, I would not retake any C's. I would, however, retake a C- or lower.

so getting a C in Gen Chem II at CC over the summer and then doing ok in Orgo 1 (B), Orgo 2(C+) and biochem (B+)...so should I

1. Retake Gen Chem II at my university in fall--- will they see the grade?

2. Do well on MCAT in summer and then forget about retaking

3. Retake Gen Chem II at university in fall and do well on mcat

Yeah I have 2 C's...i can see the rejection letters already?!!! 🙁
No one is perfect but there are a lot of people who have all A's so I'm just worried and stressed because why does on exam determine the rest of my life forever.

That, again, depends. If you hate over a 3.5, the C's won't be a big deal. If, however, you have under a 3.5, it might be good to retake one of the 2 C's or both if they will boost you over the 3.5. A "C" won't disqualify you from any med school. There are folks here with D's and F's that were never retaken.

yes but my chances are significantly lower and now I have to do extra well on the mcat...but like they say, when the going gets tough; the tough get going!

time to work hard, final push and finish strong!
