So I have a quick question. I am taking classes this summer at my local CC to get a head start for next semester. I want to re-take Bio (I made a C the first time, and the re-take would really help out my sgpa and I need it to) and take physics for the first time (so I'm not stuck working full time, going to school full time, taking an extremely hard lab class, and traveling for interviews). I am taking them at my CC for money reasons. It's less than a 1/10th of the cost to take it at the CC versus my top 20, over priced, uni.

Anyway, the physics class and bio class overlap in time, but the bio class is offered online. Am I allowed to re-take bio online? Any advide would be greatly appreciated.

If you take it at the CC it will show on the transcript as just being a course taken, not as an online class. That being said, most DO schools have no problem with online courses, but some Allo schools will not accept them at all. Be sure to contact the schools you are interested in and ask them. Also, does the online class have a lab? Is the lab done in the class room? This can make a difference too. And if it is a retake, make sure the credits are the same so that It will replace the prior class. One more thing, if you are doing it for replacement, make sure the online class will be one you are successful at and that a class room setting wouldn't be more beneficial. Good luck!

I'm going to retake an elective science class that I got a C in the first time, just to give myself a GPA boost. Ive always assumed it would count towards my science GPA, and I don't think it shows on my transcript as online. I don't think you'll have a problem.

Thank you so much for that good response. If it doesn't matter, I think I will re-take both Bio I/II and then just take Physics II (oddly, the only physics offered over the summer, but whatever...some physics is better than none. I'll just have to take Physics I at my uni during the semester) in the classroom.

Yes, the class includes the lab, and to my knowledge you have to go to campus for some of that. I think I can handle the online-class style. It's right before application time so I'm very motivated, and I don't mind putting in the work, but a better GPA would really make me feel more at ease.

My only concern is something you mentioned - the credits are the same (4 credits for bio I and 4 for bio II), but how do I make positive it will properly replace my old bio grade? (which was bio I 3 credits and then a 1 credit lab class, and same for bio II). Both are intro to bio.

I know that some D.O. schools(i.e. NYCOM) don't accept pre-req classes taken online, only upper sciences. But since I'm hearing that they can't tell anyway.....then by all means retake online.

My biggest concern would be getting the Cs in both bio 1 and 2 and retaking at a CC. if you are planning on taking additional bio classes at a university, you may be ok, but if you don't, it could look like you can't handle the university level. Fwiw.

I have seen that the credits have to match up. Outside of that, I do not really know. I do agree with the above poster in that you want to make sure you prove you can handle the university course load. Of course there is that one person who may have taken all pre reqs at a CC, but they usually already had a degree. Have you already taken physics then? Are you retaking all your pre reqs? I am in the position of having to retake bio and gen chem, as I took them at a liberal arts school that is not regionally accred. Hence, the Uni I am at will not accept them for my degree. Like I said, please be sure and contact the adcoms at the schools you are interested in. You do not want to get burned later over the lack of a phone call.

Here's the simple and final answer: Don't take it at a CC and don't take any science courses online if you want to go to medical school.
