Hi everyone,

I'm in a situation. I took a 5 credit physiology class a few years ago and did poorly. Now I'm at a different university where they offer human anatomy & physiology 1 and 2 in the bio dept for 4 credits each. So it's a total of 8 credits when both are taken. I ended up taking those 2 classes and aced them both but obviously since it's lesser credits than the original it will not be replaced no matter what.

So it will not boost my gpa but can it excuse my performance in the original physiology class? I ask this since there's no way I can go back to that school and retake that class specifically and I can't find any other school that offers the same course for 5 credits nearby. I'm just wondering if I will still have a shot at medical school via my performance in the recent physiology courses. I just want to accept that it won't get replaced. Will it work? If not, any ideas??

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.

We really can't tell you if you have a shot or not based on one or three classes. Unfortunately, since you weren't able to replace it, schools will still see a bad mark with out remediation.

Does any one know of any 5cr online human physiology class that schools would accept? I'm just really desperate to find out what I can do. I did a search and found very few but don't know which ones schools would prefer. Thanks.

no replies?? I guess my situation must be really hopeless. Let me rephrase the question; how far can this non replaced but retaken course go to hurt me do you think? because to be honest the 2 sem sequence covered way much more content than the 1 sem 5 credit course. This issue has been bugging me for a week now. any thoughts?

I think it's unrealistic for medical schools to think that everyone is able to re-take the exact same class at the exact school that you originally took. Even though your old grade won't be replaced since the units aren't the same or greater, wouldn't you think that if a school reviews all of your transcripts, then they would clearly see you did do better in some sort of physiology despite it not replacing your old grade? I don't know why they wouldn't count this as a positive thing, but I know I can't speak on their behalf.

It sounds similar to when someone does poorly in an upper division elective at one school, but can't really find the same class with an equivalent syllabus or units at a different school to re-take it (think very specific classes like stem cell bio etc). In that case, it's usually suggested you just take a different elective(s) that can show you are able to handle higher-level science courses. Even if it doesn't raise your GPA by much (since there wouldn't be grade replacement), it will still contribute to an "upward trend" of doing well. I guess that's just my opinion.
