My question:
"... I took a general chemistry 1 class at my university, which was 4 credits.I am trying to retake it at a community college but it is divided in to lecture (3 credits) and lab (1 credit).Would this count as retaking a course? Will the grade replacement work if I take the 3+1 course?..."

Response:
It must be the same course content and course level in order to qualify. If so, then yes.

HOWEVER, I been hearing that taking a 3 credit course and 1 credit lab won't be able to replace my old grade (from SDN). While I will call them and ask again, does anyone have experience with this?
I'm not sure if AACOMAS support person thought the class I was planning to retake was a 4 credit course that had 3lecture+1lab together.

It sounds to me like you explained clearly to them that it's the same course but that the credit distribution is fine.
You should call them and explain whats going on. But i'm sure this happens all the time and they know what you're asking!

Reverse situation here, I'm retaking a chem class that was a 3 hr. lecture (D) + 1 hr. lab (A) -- the retake is 4 hr. together at a different school... I'm not sure how it works either, so say I get a B in the new course, does it replace both old grades or what?

You should message them and get back to me...

I've contacted them before and got the general response, "as long as the class is similar in content and of equal or more hours, it should be fine." ...okay that doesn't answer my question.

I was in the same situation, I called AACOMAS and they told me that it is fine. As long as the lab and course cover the same class that you previously took, you will be ok.

AACOMAS > SDN

I took a class that combined lab and lecture (4 hours total), retook them but lecture (3 hr) and lab (1 hr) separately, they can replace the 4 hr class.

They even told you that you could, you're good.

Yes, that 4 hour class can replace the lecture and lab. So lets say for example:

3 hr lecture ( D)
1 hr lab (A)

retake:

4 hour lab + lecture (A) = 3 hr (A) + 1 hr (A)

It has to be the same class, so a gen chem class replacing a gen chem class works. You can't replace a Intro to Bio with Molecular Bio. hope this makes sense.

Thanks but how can I believe you if AACOMAS>SDN but I'm getting this information from you on SDN??? Hehe

Okay, I think I'm clear now. Thanks. The way I'm reading it, the one grade I receive for the 4 hr class will still be broken into two grades.

In all honesty, I'm not really concerned with it, whether they calculate it as two grades or one, it's not going to effect my GPA by that much. I was just curious.

I was aware that retakes are only applicable to the same course. Although I am retaking a few courses at a different college that have slightly different names, but the course content is similar. AACOM said it should be fine as long as it's an equivalent or higher level course and the course descriptions were similar.

A couple of examples:

Original: PHYS 1050 - Astronomy: The Solar System. History of astronomy and the physical properties of the earth, moon, planets and minor bodies.
Replacing with: PHYS 1404 - The Solar System: The study of the celestial sphere, the planets and their satellites, the sun and other objects in the solar system.

Original: MGMT 3370 - Organization Management: The management function; basic principles, concepts, and practices in the operation of organizations.
Replacing with: MGMT 3820 - Management Concepts: Management philosophy; planning, organizing and controlling; entrepreneurial processes; organizational performance; structure and design.

heh. touché!

I sometimes see people giving anecdotal information with no real source on the forums, I'm just relaying the info i got from aacomas myself.

I was told that the 4 hour class will be broken down into 3 hour lecture and 1 hour lab on your AACOMAS transcript.

Wait...so If I took a class at a 4 yr uni and failed, and retook it at a community college, as long as it was same description and everything, it can be replaced?

Like 7 years ago, I was an idiot and when I got accepted to a 4 yr uni, I wasted my time not going to class, doing badly and getting kicked out. After that I took some time off to work and re-evaluate my life. Now I want to go back to school, make up for the bad grades, get a degree. I know allopathic schools are out of the question, but I have some inkling of hope for the osteopathic schools at least? If I have to make up the coursework in a 4 yr uni for it to be replaced, please let me know.

Can someone please answer my question?

lol totally forgot, thanks though
