does anyone here know if most of the vet schools in the US average the grades if you retake a pre-req course or if they take the higher grade...

while it DOES VARY by school, in the course of my investigating many vet schools, i found that the majority averaged your grades. kinda sucks...but still, anything is an improvement.

I've been debating on re-taking one or more courses, too. The one I was thinking about the most is Stats, which I really hated in undergrad. I'm going to see how I do in the rest of my pre-reqs, but I really, really don't want to re-take it. Ugh. 🙁

OKSU averages, Western and KSU replace. Those are the only ones I personally know about!

You know, I didn't realize that KSU replaces. I didn't apply to OKSU and Western (was missing stuff for them)...

... Ah, a mystery is now revealed to me! Thanks TwelveT :biglove: (and thank you, K-State)!

I know, I really do wish OKSU replaced. Oh well...

Maybe I'll email some more adcoms and find out about some other places! It sure would be nice to just have this info available somewhere. That, and maybe I can improve my chances... 😉

VMRCVM takes the (gulp!) lower of your grades. But, they will note that you retook the class.

You definitely have to check with each school because (as seems the way with most parts of this process!) there is no standard "rule".

how can they take the lower? i mean, do they still require a minimum of 2.0 in all your courses? what if the first time you took it you got lower than a 2.0, are you just completely screwed?

Whoa! I wish I'd known that before I applied there! I got a D the first time I took my cells/genetics bio class, and a B+ the 2nd time. I also retook Gen Chem from getting a D the 1st time and got an A- the second time. I guess showing improvement doesn't impress them? That's silly. 🙄

For a few of the required science courses, I had VMRCVM replace those grades. The first couple bio courses I took I got C's, but I was able to have them count higher level bio courses which I took later on and got A's. I think in order to do this, I had to have taken the classes over 7-8yrs ago. I can't remember if this policy applied though just to required science classes.

Yes, only required science courses 7 years or older.

Seven Year Policy
Where required science courses have been taken by an applicant seven or more years prior to the application deadline, they MAY be repeated, or courses of a higher level substituted, with the written approval of the Admissions and Standards Committee.
The approved repeated or substituted courses will be used in the calculation of the Required Science Course GPA. ALL courses taken will be used in the calculation of the Cumulative GPA.
