Hi Everyone,

My score in Part I is 81, in part 2 I have 75, in TOEFL 95. MY GPA is 1.8 (evaluated by ECE). Right now I have started prepration for improving my score in part I. I am planning to take part I in March and then I am planning to take licence of dental hyginist in Florida. But someone told me that since my GPA is very low, so even if I improve my scores in part I it will not help me to get admission.

So right now I am confused whether to study for part I or try the option for dental hygine in Florida. Please advise me what is best for me in this situation.

Thanks.

GPA 1.8 is extremely low in US education system. Besides retaking your Part1. You may also try to improve your GPA There are 2 things you may try for GPA. First, try to ask for dean letter from dental school you graduated stating your class rank with the range of GPA students graduated on that year. Then try to talk to ECE if they can reevaluate your transcripts based on dean letter. Second, you can try attend a Master program in US and try to do best especially on your GPA. I wish my 2 cents help. GL

hi there
since i so ur advise for the person with gpa with 1.8,
just made me wonder if you have any beneficial advise for me, as my gpa is 2.35.
your reply would be appreciated

thanks.

You never know how you get accepted!
Many schools require a high NBDE 1 score to grant you an interview, while others are looking first at your GPA - above 3.0
Other schools are reviewing the applications based on personal statement, reco, GPA, toefl and then board exam, experience.... So it depends...
I was reading on SDN that a dr. from Nepal got into a school or even more with a very low GPA, around 2.0!!! So as I said, you never know what is going to be, they saw something in your application, they invite you for an interview, they like you and you perform very good, and then they accept you.
Good luck!!!!!!👍

Hey there,

I advice you to take the solution from the hourse mouth(call every single advanced standing program in the US) tell them directly your scors, GPA ect

Frankly they will tell you wat you can do . some schools didt care about you gpa as others are, most of them depend on your NBDE part one and two with toefl . then you can write a explantation about your low GPA in personal statment .

Dont keep any 1 put you down , do as I told you(CALL THE SCHOOL DIRECTLY).

Best of luck !👍

I agree with TOM! Call the schools, don't give up, you never know.... And don't forget my examples, they are TRUE!
Good luck!👍

PS: we should stand up the storm, and don't let anyone put us down!
Best of luck to all!!!👍

i know a person who had a gpa of 2.1 and part 1 score of 87.............................he was rejected from nyu but then he joined a clinical research program in nyu and passed it with a gpa of 4............and now he is in nyucd! so gpa wont b a prob if u choose a right program to improve it.

one more thing,,,as some of u r preparing again, how much r u all targetting next time?? my part 1 score is 83 with 3.2 gpa 260 toefl , 6 months exp..................wat say , any chances for nyu?

Hi Skm,
ECE scores are important but since there is literally nothing you can do about that try other ways in which you can impress the dental schools. Contact dental schools and find out about their research programs, you might have to do a year or 2 of research and then reapply. You should also have NDB 1 above 90%.
Also reevaluate your priorities, dental hygiene is another good option, less stress and you can make a good living.

Let me give you some solid and sincere advice, WITHOUT The sugar coating. There is no way for you to be interviewed/accepted at any program (that I know of), with that GPA. You must first realize that 1.8 = NON-PASSING GPA. Be honest with yourself.

Now that we have identified your problem, what you need to do is enroll in some kind of advanced education program (masters, fellowship or even community college), in hopes of trying to offset your old GPA. I am sure this is no surprise to you, as your 1.8 ECE GPA is grounded in reality, and reflects past difficulties in your prior dental education.

You have an uphill battle to be fought, but it has been done before (as a previous post here mentioned - NYU).

Good Luck.

Thanks eveyone for valuable suggestions

As long you are targetting the hygenist program in Florida, I don't think you have a problem if you pass the hygenist boards part 1 and 2 .
go for it and good luck

Hi,
Yes, i too think that gpa is the problem... Below 2.0 (ECE) is very low, sorry to inform you... All dental graduate programs in US require minimum of 2.0 gpa for their students. And in order to be competitive when you apply for a dental school in US, i think more important is how you have performed in your country, then your scores in Part1/2 and experience in US, toefl, then reco, cv and rest of papers in your application.
GPA needs to be worked on, no doubts for me! The scores on Part1/2 are passing, especially part 2 helps. Yeah, try to improve gpa, take some dental courses. Then apply to many schools, not just 1-2 or 3... Make it more than 10 applications, maybe someone will invite you for interview than accepts you.
Good luck Doc! 👍

If I am in your shoes, I would do both of them. Go for your hygenist carrer and also retake part 1. I think that will help you the most, and may cover the black spot of your application(gpa)
