Hi All!

Ok I'm going into my junior year. I screwed up on all my chems (I've beaten myself up over it plenty trust me. Lots of fam problems, financial issues, I talk about what happened all I want, but dental schools only care about whats on paper so that's what I'm trying to improve).

Yes that's right, straight C's from G.Chem to O.Chem but I got Bs in most of the labs. Doing great in Bio classes, B+s and As (I'm a Bio major so I've taken quite a few so far).

Should I retake some of my chem classes, so that my gpa can get boosted up. I know ADCOMs will see that it's a repeat course and it's a major red flag that I got Cs in all my chems, but If I retake them it'll make the difference between me applying next year with a 3.35 GPA vs. a 3.481.

Keep in mind, I would retake G.Chems 1 & 2 during this upcoming Fall and Spring, and I'd have to retake the Orgos in the summer. But I don't want to send my app in that late (after summer session). So anyone know if you can send in your app with transcript as is when apps open up in June, and update your GPA later so the schools can see?

Complicated, long, and shameful story but any help would be greatly appreciated!

What is your science GPA? If you don't mind me asking.

By the time I apply next cycle and if everything goes as planned (which it has to because I have no other choice if I want to get in), my sGPA should be about:
3.039 without retaking the gen. chems, a 3.164 if I retake the gen. chems, or a 3.289 if I retake the gen chems and orgos.

There is not much point in repeating courses you have already taken, unless you feel you are ill prepared.

Will you be retaking these courses at the same university? Does your university let you replace C's? I know a few schools that have policies on retaking where it must be D or lower to retake.

Well the goal is to better my GPA. Retaking one of these will improve my GPA better than taking another 4 credit course.

I will be retaking them at my university, they average out the two grades. So I must get As the 2nd time around to average out a B on my GPA calculation. And my school does allow a retake if it is higher than a D.

Don't waste your time retaking those classes, just take higher level sciences courses and do good!!

Yeah. Money better spent on taking upper div science courses to show you can handle them. Yes your GPA might improve, but the whole purpose of having high GPA is to prove admissions committee that you have a academic potential as a dental student. Thus, repeating courses won't show anything.
In fact if you get anything lower than A, including A-, puts you at risk.

Thanks so much everyone! I know the question may have seemed trivial and stupid but I think sometimes we get so nervous and stressed we need others to just state some common sense. Since I'm a Bio major, and I only need two more classes for a chem minor now (Analytical and Phsycial Chem) I think I'll work my butt off to take those two classes and kill myself for As.

Again thanks so much SDNers! G'luck!

Don't retake the classes just make up for the C grades with the DAT. If you get 19+ on the gen chem part of the DAT you will make up for the low grades
