Hi,

I barely failed the psych shelf and am preparing for the retest on Nov. 3rd. I didn't study at all practically the 1st time, I only read through First Aid 2/3, once over the course of 2 days.

I am thinking that memorizing Pre-Test and First Aid should be sufficient to pass (I need only to get at least the 5th percentile nationally, to pass). Although I honored the rotation, the attending never really pimped me at all so I didn't really learn anything practical.

Will this strategy be adequate? How necessary might it be to also read blueprints?

Thanks!

Not to sound too harsh, but if you failed the shelf the first time, you should not be looking at what's just "sufficient to pass" or "adequate." IMHO, the Psych shelf was the easiest one of all the 3rd year shelves (others may feel differently). I would read through First Aid AND Blueprints. Pretest was waste of time. I would try to read Case Files instead. First Aid and Blueprints are extremely short. You should be able to read both of those in a week and then Case Files in one week.

The kaplan notes/videos for psych worked for me on the shelf. They were not good at covering drug interactions that u need to know (MAOI with demerol,SSRIs etc..)

Gluck

Is there a huge difference between case files and blueprints. I only have a week left and already purchased case files, but now people keep talking about blueprints in my rotation... does it matter? Thanks

My advice is to buy or borrow the lange and appleton Q's book. It REALLY helped me on that shelf alot!!!!

I highly recommend it, I used first aid too... and did pretty well

GOOD LUCK! I have an OB/GYN shelf on the same day as you! 🙂:luck:

I am half way through First Aid now, will finish the other 1/2 tomorrow. Then I will plan to read Blueprints at least 3 x and go through PreTest 2x. I hope that will be enough. Many people read things in preparation for the exams, but when I read a book, my goal is to have it memorized. I'd rather use fewer sources than more. So I'm betting on Blueprints, First Aid, and PreTest to get me through to a pass (i.e. > 5th national percentile). Again, I didn't study the first time (don't ask why - I'm just looking for advice at this point what other people have done and if anyone did these 3 sources and how comprehensive this combo is). Thanks!

so did anyone out there use the combination of First Aid, Blueprints, and PreTest in preparation for the psych shelf? How did it work out for you? Thanks?
