I have signed up to take some biology courses at the local state university this coming semester on my journey to boost my GPA. It turns out that because I withdrew completely in the middle of the semester 5 years ago, I am on academic probation and can only take 13 hours. I'm signed up for 11 hours of bio courses. I am wondering if it might be viewed negatively if I retook Comp 1 and Speech at the local community college. I got CLEP credit for Comp 1 before and have a C in speech from a 4 year university. Would it be a big deal to retake these at the community college same semester I'm taking my bio courses?

I don't think it is a big deal at all - go for it.

I agree, liberal arts requirements are rarely questioned on where they were taken... You'll be fine... Good luck with the journey!

Public service announcements on "retake", "fresh start" and "community college:

Retakes: The old bad grade? It never goes away. MD schools will average it into your GPA calcs. DO schools will forgive the old bad grade, but you still have to list it.

Fresh start: no such thing, for med school admissions. You have to submit every transcript you ever got, blemishes and all. How a school calculates your GPA doesn't matter. How a school treats a retake doesn't matter. The med school app service reviews your transcripts, line by line, against your categorization of each course you ever took.

Community college: controversial in general. IMHO if your academic prowess is in question due to GPA damage, coursework taken at a community college doesn't substantially raise confidence in your abilities. (But I agree with others that English/Speech are completely appropriate at a CC.)

Best of luck to you.

Except for Texas Fresh Start Program.

Public service announcement about Texas Fresh Start:

Texas Academic Fresh Start:
1. Be, or become, a TX resident
2. Wait 10 years from last undergrad effort (and hope that the policy doesn't change)
3. Petition for fresh start
4. When granted, restart undergrad (some folks report that you can have this in progress before you petition)
5. Stay in TX for med school. Nobody else cares what TX wipes away.

Best of luck to you.

You don't have to wait 10 years before taking undergrad classes again. It simply whipes everything over 10 years old. Hence I can stay in my state and take classes for a year or two, then move to TX and establish residency, then apply for the fresh start program. Come this December I will have 2 BS degrees..so the only thing I could have to do would be to retake the required prereqs whiped by the fresh start to be able to apply to TX med schools.
