Anybody deciding between Rheum and Hem/onc? It seems like these two subspecialties have a lot in common (chronic illness, difficult to treat, geriatric population, non-procedural).

I heard hem/onc docs get more respect, recognition and financial compensation than rheumatologists...Is that true? Any rheumatologist feel inferior or being looked down by other "top-rated" subspecialists (ie cards, GI, ortho surgeon)? I don't want to choose a field that I regret later...

I went through this same decision pathway during my internship a few years back (Rheum vs Heme-Onc). I had been thinking Heme-Onc but the Rheum fellowship directors were trying to encourage me to short-track into Rheum. I thought that a competitive Rheum fellowship would be easier to get into than a competitive Heme-Onc one. Scientifically the two fields share many similarities since cytotoxic chemo and immunomodulatory or targeted therapies are often shared btw the two. However, in the end what tipped me towards Heme-Onc was the intensity of the patient-doctor relationship which I found unparalleled among any other subspecialty of IM.
