Anyone done/doing this? How bad is the app process when placed on top of med school apps? I'd like to give it a try, but it's such a long shot that I just can't see all the extra time if it's a really involved process.

I know someone who did it (not a med student) and the process was very time consuming and rigorous. he did get it through so it was worth it.

BTW, your mdapplicants is extremely impressive. I had no idea you were only 22...don't you have a son who was old enough to understand about your MCAT score last year?

Hey-

I did it; though I certainly didnt do it alongside applying to medical schools.

You absolutely SHOULD apply. I did it, and certainly didnt think I was as "qualified" as some of the people who get the scholarship.

I applied through my college, and they only will nominate 1-2 candiates (varies between schools). If you're fortunate enough to get the nomination, your file gets forwarded to the Rhodes National Selection committee. Then, you may get called as a state finalist, which entails doing the evening dinner/drinks followed by morning interview. From state, they select 2-4 Regional finalists. Do the entire thing again: evening dinner/drinks followed by interview. From there, they announce the Rhodes Scholars.

I had such an incredible and encouraging advisor. He really motivated me, and I went as far as the regional interview. Believe me, putting "I was a Rhodes Scholarship Finalist" on your C/V doesn't look too shabby

Besides, you learn so much about yourself, and will meet some of the most incredible people (even if you dont get the scholarship).

PM me if you want to discuss this further, and best of luck!

you have a leg up from being an athlete (saw your mdapp thing). you obviously have to be really smart, but they like the well-rounded types.

Geez, dude, if I were you I'd give up the medicine thing and start thinking of being president of the US. 👍

A friend of mine didn't win the Rhodes, but did win the Marshal last year while applying to MD/PhD programs as well. She'll be going to Oxford, the NIH, and WashU to eventually get her MD/PhD.

I know 2 Rhodes scholars, one of whom was immensely qualified.

I know a Truman scholar who is more qualified than either of the two Rhodes scholars (although he may yet become a Rhodes scholar this year).

willthatsall, if you understand the purpose of the Rhodes scholarship and you want to go for it on top of your med school application, by all means do it. You've got the right stuff.

Haha, no I sure don't. You might not be mistaken though, I might have been making up some story just for the hell of it to help relieve my MCAT anxiety.

Thanks for your experience, Meso. I PMd you.

haha ok. Otherwise i was thinking you had to have had him at like 16. 😛 Maybe it was someone else but for some reason I thought it was you. There was a thread about looking at your scores and you/someone said you waited to look at it with your son.

I spent October 03 - October 04 at Oxford, getting a M.Sc. in Medical Anthropology. I had four Rhodes scholars (three US, one Canadian) in my degree program, which only had 15 students in it total.

From talking with them, I gather the experience of applying and going to the state/regional interviews is very time consuming, especially if you're applying for other scholarships. A number of them applied synchronously to medical school though, so I don't think timing is a problem if you're organized and on top of your work load.

OP, you definitely have the numbers for the Rhodes, and your athletic ability will also help, as others have said. The committees definitely prize community work (volunteering, organizing, political work, etc.) as well. If you’re interested in the Marshall, which has a different aim than the Rhodes, it’s helpful to have published as an undergraduate.

Feel free to PM me if you have questions about the process or about Oxford. I didn't go through it myself, but I have about ten friends (some got it, some didn't) who (I'm sure) would be willing to give you some advice on the process.

Good luck! :luck:

Yep, I think you should go for it.

What's another application and more interviews?

go for it, it's a lot of fun. i made it to the state interview last year, and i guarantee you'll learn a lot and it'll be worth it. the ps should be relatively easy to adapt from the amcas ps, and you already have half the letters, so it's minimally more work. interview prep is more intense, though.
