Hello All,

I had a little change of heart lately and I have been thinking more and more of doing a residency after pharmacy school. Working for a retail company has given me an insight for the rest of my career as a pharmacist and even though I don't completely hate it, it makes me wonder if I am not living fully to my potential by settling for the first job that came to me.

The problem however is that the first two years of pharmacy I did not assume that i was going to do a residency and I am a little behind compared to my peers that decided early. Currently I will be a P3 next year and i have a 2.9 GPA and I have some leadership position thanks to connections I had in school. I work for a retail company and I have applied to a few hospital intern positions but i have not heard back. Our school has told us that 90% of students that apply for residency get them so that is a good statistic. I am just looking for some advice for people that have done it all.

I don't think the stat is as high as 90%. Maybe for your school, but nationally I think it's closer to 50%.

I'm also wanting to do a residency too. They say keeping above a 3.6 GPA makes you extremely competitive but that networking, good LORs from clinical pharmacists, and involvement in organizations/research is also good too. Different programs have different criteria that they are looking for. Try to go to Midyear during your P4 year and learn about the programs that will be showcased there. See if you can get some good clinical APPEs in your 4th year too. That's the advice that was given to me by a few P4s that matched this year.

Good luck!

The matching percentage of people that actually participated in the match and ranked at least one program was somewhere around 62-64% this year. I can't remember exactly but it was somewhere around there.

By ignoring the people who didn't have an opportunity to interview, you are presenting a more biased figure, not more accurate.

No I'm not because I said percentage of people who were able to rank at least one program not those that registered for the match. I didn't just say 62% of people matched.

I can't remember off the top of my head the percentage of those who registered for the match that matched but I didn't give that info.

Our school had a 90% matching for the past P4. I am not sure why but our school is well connected with the health systems around it and as result they usually only get residents from my school.
