I am not an animal rights activist or PETA extremist, but recently saw some photos posted of other vet students' visits to this "zoo" where the animals are being exploited. The owner of this alleged "sanctuary" has several USDA violations, is apparently breeding endangered cats, and pimping them out like a circus act for his own personal gain. The students were recommending it to other students and posting pictures all over Facebook. This makes me sick to my stomach. How is this still legal?

Hey, how did you look up the USDA violations? I haven't been able to figure out how to do that as a member of the general public.

Oh, see, maybe this is bad of me, but I would rather submit a freedom of info act request than trust second, third, or fourth hand information.

I just didn't know if they had finally made an accessible database.

I'm not a fan of set ups like these....but lots of folks have also said that I exploit my dogs (I do; they make money and contribute to human society for their upkeep), and while he may be breeding animals that are, in the wild, listed as endangered, I feel confident it isn't with the SPP support, and consequently not part of the gene pool being maintained.

In other words, these are animals that are being kept as pets that he is using to make money. I too, will someday be making money off animals that are kept as pets. I use to get a lot more upset about it, but these days generally can't bother. Even the link you sent only had two animal care concerns (that I saw, I only skimmed it to see if they had a link to a database), a declaw (and the regs have changed back and forth on those in my time, but I do feel that is inappropriate...but a vet was likely involved in that) and overgrown nails in a skunk. I'm willing to bet at least one of my pets has overgrown nails right now.

I don't like it, but I'm generally of the opinion that all animal ownership should have to go through a similar process as falconry.
