I realize that everyone says that the Robbins Q-book is great to use along with your coursework, but is it too detailed to use for Step 1? Also, does anybody know if there are any significant differences between the 1st edition and 2nd edition (i.e. are all of the questions different, or just a few here and there)? Also, if there are differences between the two editions, which one is better? Thanks for the information. 🙂

I'm using Robbins review, and I find it VERY useful and not that much detailed. Try to read the explanations of questions you got wrong or that you're not that sure (not only for the answer of that question, but also WHY the other options can't be the right answer). The good thing about this book is the way they ask you obligate you to think and fortify concepts.

I'm using 2nd edition, and I've checked 1st edition a LITTLE bit; I don't think they're that different.

Hope I answered your questions
Good luck!

The book is good stuff for your coursework and boards. The amount of detail is way more than you need for boards, but if you know the stuff in the Robbings Q book, you're set. I found that reading Goljan RR Path helped me answered a lot of the questions during board studying. So give it a shot.

well, there is a 100 page difference between the robbins review of path ed.1 and 2, so i would think there must be a couple of extra problems in it.

I didn't use Robbins Review as much as I would have liked, but the questions I did complete did seem fairly indicative of the level of difficulty that the USMLE could sometimes get.

I do think they were the closest approximation of the length of passages of any question source I used.

I have both editions. I think the main reason the 2nd edition is longer is because of the comprehensive review questions at the end. The editions are pretty comparable. I find the 1st edition questions to be shorter and faster to go through (the questions are essentially the same, but in the 2nd edition there is more writing/info to sift through on each question- though they are both asking the same questions with the same pictures, edition 1 questions are much shorter and more direct). I think the 2nd ed. might have 2-3 extra questions per chapter though.

The single BEST book I used getting ready for boards.

I didn't use it much during path, but the sections I did get to during the course were the ones I knew best all year.

As for step 1, I basically spent the last week before my test with this book (after lots of earlier time with goljan) and chapter by chapter answered every single question, and read the entire section, with every single explanation, including for questions I got right...I don't regret it.

but who knows...I am also one of the 1% of people around who thinks first aid is overrated, quickly gave up on it, and never bothered with it again.

I'm a current MSII and I just bought the 2nd ed of the book and am very happy with it. Heard from some students at my school who just took the boards that there were some nice additions made. Splurge and get the new addition!

I had the 1st edition and then got the 2nd since I thought they might update the questions. This would be the first time in publishing history that any company did that for a text book. Well I fell for it.

From my flip-through it seemed that at least 80% of the questions/answers were word-for-word and picture-for-picture exactly the same. like the poster quoted there are a few additional questions per chapter and a comprehensive review that consists of 74 questions.

Only reason to purchase it is for piece of mind otherwise stick with the 1st edition.

not to be a jerk or anything

but I've been using question book for every chapter so far and been getting around 75%-80% ...to the big gurus of the form, is that a good score even? look s like a B or a C if I'm going by school grading standards!

I did really well on our first path exam, but I thought the exam was poorly written with only a few vignette, integration/diagnosis type of questions.

confused as to what to make of all this 😕 and if this is how the path on boards is??

That is very good. It's a tough book.
