So I had an awesome personal statement for this past year's cycle. It's story format, and does a really good job of highlighting a health issue I had which helped shape my decision to head to medical schools. I want to keep the essence of last year's statement, but perhaps truncate it and expand what I have done this year (which includes research, a publication, outreach, and a position on a CAB). Is it ok to keep it largely the same if I expand to what I mentioned?

PS. 3.6 cGPA, 35R (12B, 12P, 11V), ECs were admittedly pretty weak, and applied pretty late (waiting for MCAT scores).

I spoke to different admissions and they all said the same thing..Do NOT use the same one from last year. Write another statement. They will have your previous one already. The nice thing about reapplying is you bascially get your old essay plus the new one. Make sure its different!

Looks like a re-write then. 😛

Just my experience, but I used my old essay when I reapplied and just brushed it up a tad. It was essentially the same thing and it didn't negatively affect me. My experience could be the exception rather than the rule though.

Well, one of my mistakes this year was not applying very broadly, so a lot of schools are going to be seeing this for the first time. I want to keep the general theme and feel, but definitely emphasize what new I have brought to the table for this application cycle. I'm not planning on doing a simple truncation either. OY!

I had a similar experience. I reapplied this year and used my essay from last year with some minor edits. I don't think it had a negative affect on my application either.

To you two: are you accepted to places you consider yourself competitive at?
