i know the world's experts post frequently on this forum.

if anyone could compare the two programs, i'd appreciate it.

my aspirations are to do academic surgery, doing clinical outcomes / healthcare disparities (public health-y) type research (so basic science research opportunities don't matter as much, i guess). i would love to live in manhattan during residency, and i am limited to choosing between these two programs.

i think i might be happier at mt. sinai because the work environment appears to be more resident-friendly and the program director is VERY supportive (an outlier in my int trail experiences). however, i got the impression cornell has better icu/trauma, oncology, autonomy, and national name recognition.

ultimately, i have to make the decision myself, but i hear you can get great advice from an anonymous online forum like studentdoctor.

many thanks, in advance for good advice and/or quality sarcastic/witty putdowns.

For an academic career, Cornell is the better choice. It has name recognition where Mt. Sinai has essentially none outside of NYC.

I think I would actually disagree that Sinai has "no name." Cornell's "name" out in the world is more tied to the undergraduate institution than anything else.

In fact, for the sort of academic career you seem to be interested in, Sinai might be a better pick. They have, for example, a fabulous mutlidisciplinary global health program (one of the few in the country in which surgery residents can participate), which includes an MPH.

You can find good housing in their corner of Manhattan without having to live on top of the hospital like at Cornell.

Most importantly, it sounds like your gut is telling you which one you prefer! (And btw I agree with you about the 'flavor' of each place).

Yeah, they have a similar flavor to them. Cornell/NYP is an older program/setup, has the MSK affiliation, gaurenteed housing, has the better reputation, even in surgery (not just undergrad), and fellowship placement seem to also favor Cornell... that being said, I also got your feel that the residents seemed happier at Sinai (especially after a 2nd look at Cornell), the administration is a bit more resident friendly. The autonomy issue I think is a wash... both main hospitals are private academic hospitals so you are at the mercy of your attendings authority for the majority of your chief year (vs places with public hospital as the teaching facility where service patients offer more autonomy), Elmhurst and Downtown seem to be a wash, and you got the VA vs Jamaca Trauma. You have the dominican rotation vs the african rotation. You can probably get the research you want at both programs.
